Dental Bridges

dental bridges in NewburyBridges are one of the technologies available to replace one or more missing teeth.

Bridges are used when there are only a few missing teeth that are all on one side of the mouth. The bridge consists of the replacement teeth with attachments on either side that sit on the native teeth adjacent to the missing teeth. There are three main types of bridge available.

Three unit bridge

This is the most commonly used type. It consists of a replacement tooth with a porcelain crown on either side. The crowns are anchored onto the adjacent teeth or on implants. The tooth is usually made of either porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. This type of bridge is fixed and cannot be removed. Also the adjacent teeth have to be prepared by being reduced in size to accommodate the crowns that will fix the bridge onto them, unless the bridge is being fixed to implants.

Maryland bridge

Maryland bridges or Resin-bonded bridges are increasing in popularity as very little preparation needs to be made to the adjacent teeth. They are constructed from a special type of resin which is cemented on to the enamel of your teeth and a metal framework. They are much stronger than conventional bridges, and as very little preparations of adjacent teeth is needed the inner part of the tooth known will not be exposed, minimising the risk of subsequent teeth sensitivity. Another major advantage is that the process is normally completely reversible.

Cantilever bridge

This type of bridge is used when there are teeth on only one side of the missing tooth. This type of dental bridge is not commonly used, as it is not recommended for use in the back of the mouth.
